The TurboDyne 99-U was a model of podracer engine.[1] It consisted of a central, circular turbine with a narrow fin that protruded beneath and in front of the turbine on either side.[2] The engine measured five meters (16 feet, 6 inches) in length from the rear of the engine to the tip of the fins and three meters (nine feet, 11 inches) in height from its top down to the lowest point of the fins.[3]
The racer Wan Sandage piloted a Podracer with a pair of tan and green TurboDyne 99-U engines attached by cables to his cockpit. Sandage used the vehicle[3] in the 32 BBY[4] Boonta Eve Classic podrace on the planet Tatooine, but was not a very good driver[5] and was initially at the back of the group of racers when the race started.[2] Sandage failed to complete the race after crashing his Podracer into a Jawa sandcrawler while off-course in the third lap.[6]
Behind the scenes
The TurboDyne 99-U first appeared in the 1999 prequel trilogy film, Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace.[2] In the current Star Wars canon, the engine was identified in the 2018 Star Wars Roleplaying supplement Endless Vigil, which was published by Fantasy Flight Games.[1]
