The trooshti were a species of flying insect native to the planet Tatooine where they existed in small number of colonies. With their four wings and sharp eyesight, trooshti were experts at preying on smaller insects. They were a rare sight on Tatooine and were usually shy of larger creatures and remained close to their hives. However, trooshti could venture further afield in search of prey when necessary. They could also swarm into vast, fast-moving columns in order to deter predators.[2] Trooshti appeared to be at least semi-sentient, utilizing pumps to obtain water on the desert world, and possibly responding to attempts to verbally negotiate with them.[1]
In 32 BBY, Jar Jar Binks spotted a trooshti stealing a battery charger from Anakin Skywalker's podracer and pursued the insect, gaining Padmé Amidala's reluctant help. Jar Jar managed to capture the original thief with his extendable tongue, but it passed the charging unit to another trooshti.[1]
The two commandeered a speeder to chase the insect into the Tantooine desert and escape two angry Gamorreans that Jar Jar had clumsily run into. While in pursuit, Jar Jar threatened the captured insect, however Padmé stopped him, arguing that civilized beings needn't resort to violence. Though unsure if it could understand her, she promised it's safety until they had re-obtained the charger and offered the idea of negotiating for its return.[1]
The chase lead the group to an abandoned moisture farm where the trooshti colony had used an underground pump to create a small oasis of water. There they learned that the pump was malfunctioning and the colony appeared to be using the charger to attempt to re-prime it. Padmé offered to help repair the pump if the colony would return the charger and also protect her from the Gamorreans, who had just arrived on the scene.[1]
While the trooshti swarmed the Gamorreans, Padmé worked on the pump and got it working just as the warriors slipped into the water, surprised by Jar Jar resurfacing in the water. The large wave resulting from the pump suddenly starting washed the Gamorreans away.[1]
However, instead of directly giving them the charger, the Trooshti took off with it again. Jar Jar and Padmé chased them again to find they had returned the charger to the podracer. Padmé speculated that they may have intended to do so all along.[1]
