A tool demagnitizer was a type of bronze-colored[3] demagnetizing tool rack[1] that consisted of a disc-shaped rack for micro-tools on a circular mountable base plate. Four demagnetizing units consisting of copper wire coils then extended up from the rack.[3] It was a useful instrument which allowed mechanics to shift the magnetic field of their maintenance tools to configure or remove magnetic capabilities.[4]
The enslaved human Anakin Skywalker and his mother Shmi Skywalker owned a tool demagnitizer as part of a collection of tools that they had mostly restored to working order after others had written the devices off as beyond repair.[1] The tool demagnitizer was sat in an alcove in the wall opposite Shmi's workstation in the Skywalker home[2] on Slave Quarters Row in the city of Mos Espa[1] on the planet Tatooine when she said farewell to Anakin before he left the planet[2] in 32 BBY.[5]
Behind the scenes
A tool demagnitizer appeared in the prequel trilogy film Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace,[2] which was released on May 19, 1999.[6] In the current Star Wars canon, the tool was identified in the 2017 reference book Star Wars: The Visual Encyclopedia.[3] The name for the tool originated in the Star Wars Legends continuity, where it was first used in the reference book Star Wars: Episode I: The Visual Dictionary, written by David West Reynolds[7] and released on May 26, 1999.[8]
