The Throne Room Gown was one of the items of clothing worn by the Human Padmé Amidala during her tenure as the Queen of Naboo. Amidala wore the regal gown during her coronation in 33 BBY, as well as during the Invasion of Naboo by the Trade Federation in 32 BBY.
Description
Worn by Queen of Naboo, Padmé Amidala, the red gown featured a broad shoulder, intended to make the queen look larger than she truly was. Two panels attached to the shoulder padding featured elaborate golden hand embroidery. The gown also featured large cuffs at the wrist, adorned with the fur of the potolli. The bottom of the gown, also ringed with potolli fur, was designed to reach the floor and flare out dramatically to hide the feet of the owner. Situated just above the base of the gown were several sein jewels, giving the dress a natural illumination.[4]
Worn with the gown, Amidala sported an elaborate hairstyle, which was, in reality, a wig. This hairstyle was paired with a red and gold faceframe that held the Jewel of Zenda over the forehead. She also wore white face paint with a red scar of remembrance on her bottom lip. She also wore white nail polish on her thumbnails, the only sign of culture from her native village.[4]
History
Coronation of the Queen
In 33 BBY,[3] Padmé Naberrie was elected as the new queen of Naboo. On the day of her coronation, she stood, back facing the large window, in the throne room of the Theed Royal Palace and was dressed in the elaborate Gown by a team of handmaidens.[5] After preparations had finished, the new queen read out a speech she had composed the night before with her head adviser, Sio Bibble.[6]
Blockade of Naboo
Amidala once again wore the gown[1] in 32 BBY,[3] while in conversation with the Viceroy of the Trade Federation, Nute Gunray, in an attempt to thwart the Trade Federation's blockade of Naboo.[1]
Behind the scenes
The Throne Room Gown was created for the 1999 prequel trilogy film, Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace. Designed by Iain McCaig and realized by Trisha Biggar and her costume department, the gown was inspired by traditional regal Mongolian dress.[7]
