"The location of the house is near Mos Eisley...mostly. I marked it on your map. Be careful. Them ranchers aren't the nicest people in the galaxy."
―A pirate leader, to a spacer[1]

The Ranch was a farm located on the Mesric Plateau, on the desert world of Tatooine during the time of the Galactic Civil War.

Description

The ranch was located near the city of Mos Eisley. Although Tatooine had few plains and little vegetation for grazing, the building was established as a ranch and several animal species, including banthas and eopies, were raised there.[1] The ranch's location, on the edge of a cliff of the Mesric Plateau, created an impressive vista on the valley below.[2]

History

"Some of our boys were looting a rancher's house when he walked in. He and his wife are holding our boys captive."
―A pirate leader, to a spacer[1]

By the time of the Battle of Yavin, the ranch was inhabited by Roric and Helen Goldenfield.[1] In 1 ABY,[3] the ranchers were harassed by a group of local pirates. Roric Goldenfield once managed to capture two of them, Arian Vh'ra and Itr Fairla, while they were looting the ranch and hold them captive in the house. A spacer later met the pirate leader who tasked the adventurer to free the pirates. However, the spacer instead helped Helen Goldenfield to prevent the pirates to escape while her husband was contacting Imperial authorities.[1]

Behind the scenes

"Although Tatooine has few plains, and little vegetation for grazing; some locals make their living working a ranch. With the view from this patio, it's easy to see why."
―In-game description of the Ranch[2]

The Ranch was a location in the 2003 video game Star Wars Galaxies, a massively multiplayer online roleplaying game developed by Sony Online Entertainment and published by LucasArts,[4] prior to its closure on December 15, 2011.[5] The Ranch was added to the game as part of the "Hero of Tatooine" questline,[4] released with "Publish 9" on June 29, 2004.[6] The "Hero of Tatooine" questline was extensively revamped upon the introduction of the "Publish 25", a.k.a. the "New Game Enhancements," on November 15, 2005,[7] but the "Honor" portion involving the ranch and the Goldenfield family in their ranch was not altered.[1]

The main house of the ranch could be considered a showcase for crafters. It contained many appearances of craftable items or reward items at the time of the launch of the game and also appearances of craftable items (or loot drops) that would appear later. The original appearance (later changed) of such items as Deuterium-pyro, Durindfire and Bivoli Tempari is found here as is the appearance of no-longer craftable items such as Aludium pu-36, Corellian Fried Ice Cream (original chef-crafted version) and Tranna nougat cream. Several house items would never be available to players such as the green carpet, red carpet or an unidentified food item.

In the game, players could also complete a collection called "Panoramic Vistas" by visiting the ranch.[2]

  3. The opening crawl of Star Wars Galaxies: An Empire Divided dates the game to after the events of Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, and additionally, Serji-X Arrogantus, who died in Star Wars (1977) 10—the events of which The New Essential Chronology dates to 0 ABY—appears in the game. Therefore, at least a portion of Star Wars Galaxies must be set in that year. Furthermore, in the game Ruwan Tokai references the destruction of the Death Star as having occurred one year earlier, and Strongholds of Resistance also places the events of Galaxies' Chapter 9: "The Fury of Exar Kun" in 1 ABY. Lastly, while Chapter 11: "The Battle of Echo Base" features the Battle of Hoth—dated to 3 ABY by The New Essential Chronology—the developers have stated that the portrayal of that battle in the game is intentionally anachronistic. Therefore, the events of Star Wars Galaxies must span from 0 ABY to around 1 ABY.
