"The Great God Quay: The Tale of Barada and the Weequays" by George Alec Effinger tells the story of Klatooinian guard Barada and two Weequay skiff guards. It was published in Tales from Jabba's Palace December 1995 by Bantam Spectra.
Plot summary
Barada uncovers the body of Ak-Buz stashed in the repulsor garage of the palace. There are no marks on the Weequay sail barge captain's body that would indicate the cause of death. The other Weequay, mad and reverent toward a simple child's toy they regard as an avatar of their moon god, try to piece together the mystery behind the murder. They ask the toy – which the call a Quay – a series of simple yes or no questions, and the device answers at random in the affirmative, the negative, or with noncommittal deflection. Following a string of lucky questions and answers from the Quay, the Weequay discover and defuse a bomb aboard Jabba's sail barge, only to get blown up anyway when Luke Skywalker destroys the vessel while rescuing his friends.
Continuity
The Quay is essentially an analog of the Magic 8 Ball toy manufactured by Mattel, and even uses the same "Reply hazy. Try again" response. Barada is described as a Klatooinan, but the spelling of that species name has been revised to "Klatooinian" in more recent materials.[2]
