Usage
To use this template, insert the following into a user talk page: {{subst:w|~~~~}}
Unlike {{welcome}}, It is no longer necessary to begin with the user's name and a comma, the new template will do this automatically. Similarly, it is no longer necessary to sign your name at the end of the post, this is also done for you.
Suggestion for improvements
I just created a user acount for this wiki and was thrown with this template. It's a bit ugly imho, so I created a suggestion for some improvements. You can find it at User:Gem/Template:W. Any suggestions and comments are welcome. If no one disagrees, I'll change this template in a day or two. --Gem (talk) 00:54, 17 August 2006 (UTC)
- Please also view User:Gem/Template:Anon and comment. --Gem (talk) 01:05, 17 August 2006 (UTC)
I updated the template and usage notes. Please discuss if you disagree. --Gem (talk) 20:08, 18 August 2006 (UTC)
Opinion
Does this welcome message need a yellow border? No offense, but I don't like it.[1] (Please, no rude comments)
- I don't really like it either. I would prefer something a little simpler like the black border around the {{anon}} template.–SentryTalk 00:14, 24 January 2007 (UTC)

Borders
The CSS3 module for border-radius is now supported in all browsers, so the Mozilla prefix should be removed. Not even new Firefox versions support it. TK999 14:59, April 3, 2012 (UTC)
- Three years late, but this has finally been fixed. Hopefully future issues won't take three years to get a fix, since I now have this page on my watchlist. —MJ— Comlink 06:08, March 17, 2015 (UTC)
Wikia doesn't seem to follow the directions ...
Well, um, it looks like Wikia just plopped the wrong thing onto my talk page: http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/User_talk:SamBronson?oldid=5616435
The result seems kind of impersonal, what with the fact that it doesn't even have my name at the top or anything...
At first I thought it'd used {{subst:w}}, but then I tried previewing what would happen if I replaced Wikia's mess with that, and got my name at the top, so that can't be what it did.
I also tried {{subst:w|~~~~}} like it says at the top of this page, but that doesn't seem to work either; a lot of the wikitext of my signature was visible in the preview for that.
And then if I do {{subst:w|SamBronson|~~~~}} like it says on the template page proper, I get two &mdash characters because my signature has one in it already.

- You received an automated welcome message from the Wikia welcome bot. We apologize for the impersonal nature of this, and you're right that it is just that, but we activated the welcome bot as a matter of practicality, since we are currently receiving thousands of new user signups for the Predict the Madness contest. Normally, we take the time to welcome each new user manually so that the message is more personal, but it seems you found our regular welcome message anyway. Once the contest ends later today, the welcome bot will be deactivated. As the message says, I hope you enjoy your time on Wookieepedia! Toprawa and Ralltiir (talk) 22:00, March 16, 2015 (UTC)
- Well, I figured out what happened: I found out on Help:Welcome tool that the wikitext Wikia adds comes from MediaWiki:Welcome-message-user, which appears to have had the template substed already. There are some tricks shown on [2] for avoiding premature substitution, though it's not immediately obvious which technique to use ... —SamBronson (talk) 02:06, March 17, 2015 (UTC)
- AARRRRRGGGGHHHHH!!!! Sorry about that. The "Welcome-message-user" in place of the username at the top was my fault. See, on the first day of the contest when we were fiddling with the welcome bot, I tried to get MediaWiki:Welcome-message-user to substitute Template:W directly, rather than having to maintain two separate templates. That attempt failed when I realized that the welcome bot doesn't actually substitute MediaWiki:Welcome-message-user like a template, but rather takes that page's raw content and dumps it directly on the newbie's talk page. So when I gave up, I just substituted Template:W and moved on to other things... not realizing that I broke the use of {{PAGENAME}} that causes the user's name to display! Like I said, AARRRRRGGGGHHHHH!!!! I can't believe I missed that. Mea culpa. Fortunately, I have a bot, so I'll run through all the talk pages that the welcome tool created within the next few days and fix the welcome messages; I think for a mistake of this magnitude, an exception can be made here to the usual rule about not editing talk page messages. —MJ— War Room 03:23, March 17, 2015 (UTC)
- Since it'll trigger emails for people, maybe add something encouraging them to edit? Perhaps something like, "Fixing a minor talk page issue. We hope to see you editing on Wookieepedia!" or some such. That way there's a welcoming bit of communication involved. - Brandon Rhea(talk) 03:28, March 17, 2015 (UTC)
- Edits that have both the bot flag and the minor edit flag don't trigger the new messages notification, so I wouldn't think they'd trigger emails either. Unless I'm missing something? —MJ— Jedi Council Chambers 04:52, March 17, 2015 (UTC)
- Ah, yeah, I think you're right. Maybe include it anyway, in case we're wrong? - Brandon Rhea(talk) 04:55, March 17, 2015 (UTC)
- Do you have emails enabled for your talk page? If so, I could test it real quick with a dummy edit under the bot account. —MJ— War Room 04:57, March 17, 2015 (UTC)
- I do. Go ahead and test. - Brandon Rhea(talk) 05:03, March 17, 2015 (UTC)

- Great. I'm going to be busy this week, but I'll try to squeeze in time to get this up and running. —MJ— Council Chambers 06:04, March 17, 2015 (UTC)
- Bot run complete. I apologize to the server gods for initially forgetting to put sleeps in my code. :P That was fixed after the remote host forcibly cut the connection, presumably for violating some kind of rate limit. Anyway, while I was at it, I noticed that the welcome tool also sometimes left welcome messages on users who had registered and already received a manual welcome years ago, so I had the bot simply remove the autowelcome in those cases rather than fixing the username. —MJ— Comlink 04:32, March 19, 2015 (UTC)
