The TDL nanny droid was a model of nanny droid manufactured by AccuTronics to serve as a caregiver for its owner's children.
Description
Manufactured by AccuTronics, TDL nanny droids stood 1.9 meters tall and sported four arms. Each limb and the droid's torso were sheathed in artificial flesh, a soft brown synthskin,[1] while the rest of the unit was clad in silver plating.[4] This covering maintained the body temperature of a Human in an effort to comfort infants during the transition between the droid and their natural mother. The body of a TDL droid was smooth and rounded off, to prevent accidental injury to the child on edges or corners.[1]
A TDL nanny droid
The TDL droid's design was based on a Human form,[3] and AccuTronics consciously chose not to model TDL droids after alien species. The droid's four arms allowed the TDL to hold the baby while also performing other tasks.[1]
AccuTronics decided against giving the droid direct breast-feeding capabilities due to market research indicating that customers would find such a feature to be disturbing.[3] The TDL featured an internal basin that was capable of holding two liters of refrigerated milk or formula. The liquid was pumped through a warming unit, then passed into one of the droid's arms when it was decanted into a detachable bottle.[1]
TDL droids were equipped with a limited AA-1 VerboBrain[1] fitted with a TranLang III communications module.[4] This allowed the droid to understand millions of languages, although the feature was rarely used to its full capacity. TDLs were experts in child-rearing techniques, including those from thousands of different alien cultures. Datalogs were full of advanced theories covering child cognitive and social development, and TDLs were fully capable of acting as tutors for preadolescents.[1]
The droid's vocabulator gave TDLs a firm and gentle voice that was described as "grandmotherly."[1] It was a feminine voice that was designed for its soothing qualities, allowing for the droid to bond with its charges.[3] This ability to show affection to the children in their care was jokingly referred to as "hug circuitry" by the TDL series' design team.[5]
Deluxe models of the TDL could be customized to exude the scent and pheromone pattern of the child's mother.[1] Other versions had defensive measures built into them, including stun blasters or ionization generators.[4] One version, the XL-Lioness, was equipped with lethal blaster cannons and marketed towards celebrities and politicians.[1]
History
TDL nanny droids were marketed to parents with busy work schedules that did not allow them to devote round-the-clock supervision to their children.[1] Following the Galactic Civil War, Tendrando Arms manufactured the Defender Droid, a cross between a TDL nanny droid and the company's YVH-Series battle droid.[6]
