- "A generator perched on the leaning roof kept the table lamps flickering inside, and competing neon signs colored the haze of synth-smoke an ugly brown."
- ―Marda Ro, in her journal
Synth-smoke was a type of smoke.[1] Around 381 BBY,[2] the gas was present in a public house on the planet Dantooine, where its presence in the air created a haze that appeared brown under the public house's neon lights.[1] During that time,[2] Marda Ro—the Evereni[1] founder of a pirate group who would eventually become the Nihil[3]—visited the public house to quest for others of[1] her[4] species and saw the smoke.[1]
Ro later mentioned synth-smoke in a journal entry she recorded for her descendants while recounting her visit to Dantooine.[1] By 252 BBY,[5] during his youth, Ro's great-great-grandson Marchion Ro had listened to her journal, including the message where synth-smoke was mentioned.[4]
Behind the scenes
Synth-smoke appeared in a flashback in the short story "A Closed Fist Has No Claws," written by Tessa Gratton and published in the 2023 young-adult anthology The High Republic: Tales of Light and Life as a part of the Star Wars: The High Republic multimedia project.[1]
