"Side you should pick is your family. No matter what. Above all else. But here you sit, bickering like a bunch of starkles over which one gets the first and last worm."
―Glen Taffral[1]

Starklebirds, also known as just starkles, were a type of carnivorous, migratory bird[1] found on the Outer Rim Territories planet Saleucami. Flocks of starklebirds took shelter in greater cake trees, filling their many layers.[2]

In 4 ABY,[3] a group of starklebirds migrated east near enough to the Taffral house on Saleucami that their chatter-sounds could be heard by the Taffral family inside as they ate dinner together. The two sons of the family, Dav Taffral and Webb Taffral, had chosen opposing sides on the ongoing Galactic Civil War to each other and began arguing about the conflict over the meal. Their father, Glen Taffral, compared their bickering to a group of starklebirds fighting over who got to eat the first and last worms and claimed that they both should have chosen family over either side.[1]

Behind the scenes

Starklebirds were first mentioned in the 2015 novel Aftermath, which was written by Chuck Wendig as the first installment in Star Wars: The Aftermath Trilogy.[1]
