Shagreen first appeared, albeit unidentified, in "Lop & Ochō," a short film that was released as part of the first volume of the Star Wars: Visions series. The animated short, produced by Geno Studio, was released on Disney+[3] on September 22, 2021.[4] Prior to the short's release, shagreen was first depicted simultaneously in the original Japanese trailer for the series, which was uploaded to the official Star Wars YouTube channel on August 17 of that year,[5] and in the English dub trailer, which was uploaded the same day.[6] Shagreen was identified in the 2022 art book The Art of Star Wars: Visions, written by Zack Davisson. The Yasaburō clan's lightsaber, including the shagreen wrapping it, was designed by Ren Ishimori. According to concept art notes for the lightsaber, the shagreen comes from a creature that is the equivalent of sharks and stingrays.[1] In the real world, shagreen is a type of leather made from the skin of sharks and rays. In Japan, it is used to cover sword hilts.[7]
