A sensor scrambler was a type of sensor jammer that could be equipped to starships in order to disrupt the electromagnetic signatures of illicit cargo. However, some pirates and syndicates specifically searched for these disrupted signals, allowing them to find potential targets for raiding.[1]
In 3 ABY,[2] the scoundrel Kay Vess paid a starship mechanics five hundred credits and supplied them with two Cargo signature scramblers in order to install sensor scramblers in the hold of the Trailblazer, her EML-850 light freighter. This allowed her and ND-5 to take contracts smuggling illicit cargo such as spice.[1]
Behind the scenes
Sensor scramblers first appeared in the canon continuity in the "A Pirate's Fortune" expansion for the Massive Entertainment video game Star Wars Outlaws,[1] which was released on May 15, 2025.[3] In the expansion, players could purchase the "cargo cloaking" upgrade whose description stated that it used sensor scramblers to allow the player's ship transport suspicious cargo..[1]
Sensor scramblers were originally introduced in the Star Wars Legends continuity in the 2006 video game, Star Wars: Empire at War: Forces of Corruption developed by Petroglyph and published by LucasArts.[4]
