Senior Senator was a position used by the Imperial Senate of the Galactic Empire and New Republic Senate of the New Republic.

Description

Senior Senators existed within the Imperial Senate of the Galactic Empire. Within its bureaucracy, they were the subject of procedural rule Article 17-252 proposed by the Imperial Ruling Council.[3]

Within the later New Republic Senate, the position also existed and was used to refer to long-term members of the senate. Proper senatorial protocol in the New Republic Senate required the junior senator to call upon the senior senator. Senior senators also chaired committee meetings and took part in New Republic Defense Force inspections.[2]

History

As of the year 2 BBY,[4] even though he was only a part time delegate by that time,[5] the Alderaanian Bail Prestor Organa, husband of Queen Breha Organa,[1] was the Senior Senator of[3] the Core Worlds planet[1] Alderaan in the Imperial Senate.[3] Other Senior Senators included Erveen of Hodi and Mon Mothma of Chandrila, who denounced Galactic Emperor Sheev Palpatine as a monster and fled from the Senate after the Ghorman Massacre. With her departure,[3] she became the leader of Alliance to Restore the Republic[6] she and Organa had secretly helped to build.[3]

Some senior senators in the New Republic included Leia Organa, Tai-Lin Garr,[2] and Erudo Ro-Kiintor.[7]

Behind the scenes

The Senior Senator position was first introduced as a New Republic position in Before the Awakening[7] and was later established to also be an Imperial Senate title in Leia, Princess of Alderaan.[1] Its capitalization was then confirmed through the Star Wars: Andor episode "Welcome to the Rebellion."[3] Leia, Princess of Alderaan accidentally identifies both Mothma and Winmey Lenz as Senior Senator of Chandrila.[1] "Welcome to the Rebellion" later corroborated that the long-serving Mothma was its Senior Senator,[3] so this article disregards the mention of Lenz as Senior Senator.
