Sand elk

Sand elks were a species that hailed from Tatooine, a desert planet in the galaxy's Outer Rim Territories.^[1]

Biology and appearance

Sand elks were large creatures with six legs, scaly skin, and antlers said to be as wide as a Corellian freighter. It had hooves capable of turning the treads of a sandcrawler into scrap and was strong enough to topple a sandcrawler onto its side.^[1]

History

During the Imperial Era, a Sand elk attacked a sandcrawlwer which was hauling many droids, including the astromech droid LA-R1. During the attack, the Sand elk managed to tear through the durasteel plating of the sandcrawler with its antlers, rip off the main hatch of the vehicle and tip the sandcrawler onto its side. After terrorizing the sandcrawler and its inhabitants, the Sand elk was scared away by blaster fire from the Jawas.^[1]

Behind the scenes

Sand elks first appeared in the short story An Old Hope in the 2021 anthology book Life Day Treasury written by Cavan Scott and George Mann.^[1]
