The SP-4 analysis droid,[2] also known as SP-4 unit,[3] was a model of analysis droid[2] characterized by its amplified optical receptors, cranial sensory ridges. They also had mouth-stalk like vocabulators,[4] which were fully functioning and occasionally featured articulated metal 'lips.' Unlike the modified SP-ISC units, the regular SP-4s did not have any full-body plating and frequently required irradiation cleanings.[1] Along with JN-66 units, SP-4 droids staffed the Analysis Rooms of the Jedi Temple on Coruscant.[4] In the Temple, the SP-4 units and their JN-66 counterparts worked in teams to assist both Jedi assigned to different missions, as well as the various law enforcement organizations and officials relevant to any case.[5]
SP-4 analysis droids were 1.4 meters tall, closely resembling the PK-series worker droid, although their heads were a far more complex piece of technology. This superficial similarity belied their intelligence and capability. SP-4 units had triple-digit hands. They worked directly with organics and regularly partnered with the JN-66 units, acting as an interface with the rest of the team. They could also be found running various security stations across the Temple. In these stations, they processed the information coming from camera feeds, audio pickups and data streams while they watched the footage for intruders of any description, both physical and digital. The SP-4 units then passed this information to their designated team leader for further analysis or to a Jedi.[1]
The SP-4s were known to be dogged, unimaginative and slow and were criticized for being unable to make intuitive leaps. It may have been unfair, though also adept and efficient, as SP-4 units were viewed as being 'just' droids.[1] However, more experienced SP-4 units later began to make those 'intuitive' judgements–or at least appeared to make them.[5] During the Clone Wars, SP-4 droids assisted human hospital staff, where they used their abilities to make rapid assessments of a casualty's condition and needs. In hospitals across the galaxy, SP-4 units along with other analysis droid models, analyzed medical data, particularly in the field of infection control.[1]
