"No, don't go that way! That's where the recon droid went!"
Waxer, to Numa[9]

The Ringneck recon droid, also known as the Viper recon droid or the Separatist probe droid, was a model of probe droid manufactured by Arakyd Industries. It was used by the Confederacy of Independent Systems during the Clone Wars.

The Ringneck recon droid was used by the the Confederacy of Independent Systems during the Clone Wars. The probe droids were typically designed for stealth, spying on enemies and relaying data to their commanders. While on their missions, they performed reconnaissance, infiltration and surveillance. Their built in blasters enabled them to fight in combat.[10] They were manufactured by Arakyd Industries,[1] and came in a variety of sizes.[4]

The Ringneck recon droid,[11] also known as the Viper recon droid,[1] was one of the most feared variants of probe droids. Over 1.65 meters in height,[12] the Ringneck sported a large, bulbous central photoreceptor alongside several smaller ones that dotted the probe droid's main body.[7] The droid was used consistently by the Separatists during the Clone Wars against the Galactic Republic.[8] The Republic's successor state, the Galactic Empire, in turn deployed the droid against the Spectres group of rebels on the planet Lothal.[7]

Another variant was a small probe droid model with a main, contractable photoreceptor installed on its body. The model was also used by the Confederacy during the Clone Wars.[5][6]

During the Clone Wars, on the planet Maridun, a newly-arrived Separatist command center deployed small Separatist probe droids during the Neimoidian Lok Durd's expedition to the world for the experimentation of his defoliator superweapon.[5] Later in the war, at the Citadel prison on the planet Lola Sayu, the smaller variant was deployed by the Separatists alongside larger Ringneck recon droids.[8]

After the Battle of Dathomir, another smaller variant on Dathomir observed Morgan Elsbeth, Nali, and two witches of the Mountain Clan search for weapons.[13]

After the end of the Clone Wars, during the Imperial Era, the droid was used by the Galactic Empire on its occupied world of Lothal. There, the probe droid patrolled Imperial installations alongside the smaller sentry droids and TIE fighters.[7]

Behind the scenes

The Separatist probe droid first appeared in the Star Wars: The Clone Wars episode "Defenders of Peace." It was again featured in the early-2015 mobile game Star Wars Rebels: Recon Missions, where it is identified simply as a "Probe Droid." The 2015 reference book Star Wars Rebels: Visual Guide: Epic Battles identifies the larger droid variant as the Viper recon droid.
