"Now that the war is winding down—"
"Winding down. It's not over?"
"Pockets of resistance remain, especially on Umbara. Our forces are engaging in several, shall we say, pacification exercises to bring about a lasting peace."

In 19 BBY, a rebellion against the Galactic Empire occurred on the Expansion Region planet Umbara. During the early months of the Imperial Era, the Imperial Military was deployed to put down the resistance as part of a wider anti-insurgent campaign, with Lieutenant Commander Orson Callan Krennic framing it as a pacification operation.

Prelude

"We did it. We took Umbara."

During the Clone Wars, a galactic conflict fought between the Confederacy of Independent Systems and the Galactic Republic, the Expansion Region planet of Umbara left the Republic after the assassination of its senator, Mee Deechi,[4] and became a major Confederate stronghold.[5] Thus, the 501st Legion and 7th Sky Corps of the Grand Army of the Republic were deployed to invade and take back Umbara[6] in 20 BBY.[7] Despite heavy resistance, the Republic overwhelmed the Umbaran Militia's impressive defense. The battle was a devastating defeat for the Umbaran government,[5] with even its capital falling to the Republic Army.[3] After its victory, the Republic began an occupation.[8]

The rebellion

Previously the site of a battle during the Clone Wars, Umbara was again home to fighting during the early Imperial Era.

In 19 BBY,[7] concurrent to the end of the Clone Wars, the Republic was transitioned into the Galactic Empire by Supreme Chancellor Sheev Palpatine.[9] That year,[2] a resistance movement emerged on Umbara, seeking to continue the fight against the Empire despite the Confederacy's defeat.[1]

In the months following the Empire's proclamation, the newly-formed Imperial Military was deployed to combat various pockets of resistance left over from the Clone Wars. One of the ensuing battlefronts was Umbara, with the rebel movement putting up a heavy resistance. When speaking to researchers Lyra Erso and Galen Walton Erso, Lieutenant Commander Orson Callan Krennic claimed the Empire had simply launched a series of pacification exercises to quell the rebellions on Umbara and elsewhere, stating the Imperial response would bring about peace.[1]

Aftermath

"Umbara was one of the major Separatist planets. The locals fought pretty hard, and got stomped pretty solidly. Hard to believe they'd want to go through that again."
―Eli Vanto — 20?cb=20250116042720 ▶️ (file info)[5]

Eventually, Umbara became part of the Empire.[10] Imperial Ensign Eli N. Vanto believed it would be unlikely for the Umbarans to risk another devastating defeat, as had occurred during the Clone Wars, by resisting. When the Umbara system nevertheless once again became the site of fighting against the Empire[5] in 11 BBY,[7] the battle had been instigated by human insurgent leader Nevil Cygni instead of the Umbarans; the rebel wanted to ensure the Empire would take over Umbara's mining industry, knowing it would be easier to bribe Imperial inspectors than Umbaran ones.[5] Bringing an end to Umbara's remaining autonomy,[10] that battle, which saw the arrival of the Imperial Navy in force, further resulted in the Umbarans fully surrendering their world to the Empire,[4] to whom Umbara also owed a massive debt its people could only pay off with such a surrender.[10]

Behind the scenes

"Composed of six squadrons, Shadow Wing distinguished itself as an effective peacekeeping and security force during Separatist mop-up operations at Umbara and Salient."
―Yrica Quell, in Alphabet Squadron[11]

The rebellion on Umbara was mentioned in the 2016 novel Catalyst: A Rogue One Novel by James Luceno.[1] In the 2019 novel Alphabet Squadron by Alexander Freed, the first installment of the Star Wars: Alphabet Squadron trilogy, "Separatist mop up operations" are mentioned by former Imperial Starfighter Pilot Yrica Quell as having occurred at Umbara and the Salient system,[11] the site of a post-Clone Wars campaign in Catalyst.[1] On April 23, 2025, when asked by a fan if the line was a reference to the rebellion on Umbara and Salient Campaign from Catalyst, Freed stated that he could not recall as it had been so long since he wrote Alphabet Squadron.[12] While unable to confirm his intentions as he did not usually keep notes on minor references like that line, Freed did speculate[13] that it was "reasonable" the Umbara and Salient campaigns mentioned in Alphabet Squadron were the same as those from Catalyst.[12]

As the events of Rogue One are dated to 1 BBY by Star Wars: Timelines, Erso was recruited in 19 BBY. Catalyst: A Rogue One Novel depicts the recruitment in the same chapter Krennic mentions the rebellion on Umbara, meaning the rebellion must have also taken place in 19 BBY.

Your assumptions about Umbara and Salient seem reasonable, and my guess is that the Corporate Sector campaign wasn't referencing any specific continuity (other than the existence of the Corporate Sector!) (In response to: "@alexandermfreed.bsky.social good afternoon! I have a quick question about something in Alphabet Squadron. I assume those first 2 are the rebellion on Umbara mentioned in Luceno's Catalyst and the Salient Campaign seen in it? If so, what is the Corporate Sector Campaign a reference to, if anything?")"
