- "General Kenobi's battalions have routed the last holdouts of Umbarans, and we've secured all sectors. We did it. We took Umbara."
- ―Advanced Recon Commando Fives reports the Republic's reclamation of Umbara
In 20 BBY, the Galactic Republic began an occupation of the Expansion Region planet Umbara.
Prelude
Umbara was a planet in the Expansion Region of the galaxy that was the homeworld of the Umbaran people. Umbara was a member of the Galactic Republic since the galactic government's founding. As such, the Umbarans enjoyed representation in the Republic, but they also showcased a habit of prioritizing their homeworld over the rest of the Republic. Enjoying a long tradition of galactic politics but often considered mysterious or deceitful, the Umbarans, thus, endured a contentious history with the government. In Umbaran political culture, changing one's position was not a betrayal but simply a way of working to better their status.[4]
The Battle of Umbara saw brutal conflict between the native Umbara Militia and clone troopers of the Republic Army.
During the Clone Wars between the Republic and the secessionist Confederacy of Independent Systems, Umbara remained a member of the Republic and was represented by Senator Mee Deechi. After Deechi's murder, however, the Umbarans would decide to secede to the Confederacy,[5] providing the Republic's rival government with their advanced technology[6] and securing the CIS with a greater control over isolated, yet vital, supply routes in the Expansion Region.[7] Further, the planet was home to a supply of doonium. Overall, Umbara became a Confederate stronghold.[8] However, the bloody Battle of Umbara, in which the native Umbaran Militia fought for the CIS,[3] resulted in the Republic reclaiming Umbara[5] and instituting an occupation.[1]
Aftermath
The Republic's invasion and the ensuing occupation were upsetting to the Umbaran sniper Luco Bronc, himself a veteran of the Battle of Umbara. All the same, he would end up joining the ranks of Zero Company[1] and find himself fighting against the CIS as the war continued.[9] At the end of the war in 19 BBY, the Republic was reorganized into the Galactic Empire by Supreme Chancellor-turned-Galactic Emperor Sheev Palpatine.[10] A rebellion on Umbara was launched against the Empire early in its reign,[11] but the Empire was ultimately able to establish its authority over the planet.[8]
