R2-D1 was an R2-series astromech droid. Queen Amidala's royal starship held a complement of droids, one of which was R2-D1.[1]

Behind the scenes

Various sources indicate the six droids onboard the Royal Starship in Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace were R2-D2, R2-B1, R2-R9, R2-N3, R2-M5, and G8-R3.[2] A single source, a "Set Piece" article in Star Wars Insider 94, replaces the name of R2 unit R2-M5 with R2-D1. This is likely a contradicted alternate name for the same droid.[1]
