"My people can reach into other's minds. Create…illusions. The baron has psychic dampeners fitted…but the rodent…if I can see what he fears most…"
―H'Tar, to Krrl[1]

Psychic dampeners were a device that could be fitted into individuals and prevent Force-sensitives from reaching into their minds and creating illusions of what they feared most. The Nihil Ithorian scientist Baron Boolan had psychic dampeners fitted, a fact that came to be known by the Force-sensitive[1] Fallanassi[2] woman H'Tar.[1]

When H'Tar and the Nazzar Krrl traveled to Boolan's lair Shingcu Station to rescue Krrl's sister Akray, who had been kidnapped by the baron,[1] between 229 BBY and 228 BBY,[3] she knew she would not be able to reach into Boolan's mind because he had been fitted with the dampeners. Instead, she began to reach into the mind of his[1] assistant[4] Reek until she stopped and attempted to flee after learning the Ithorian had a Force-consuming Nameless creature present. She was then betrayed by Krrl and handed over to Boolan in exchange for his sister.[1]

Behind the scenes

Psychic dampeners were mentioned in flashbacks in "Brothers and Sisters," a comic story included in the anthology The High Republic Adventures Phase III Annual. The story was written by Cavan Scott and published by Dark Horse Comics as part of the Star Wars: The High Republic multimedia project's Phase III[1] on January 29, 2025.[5]

  3. The High Republic – Shadows of Starlight 4 establishes that Boolan was recruited into the Nihil five months after the Destruction of Starlight Beacon, which per The High Republic – Shadows of Starlight 1 and Star Wars: The High Republic Character Encyclopedia corresponds to 229 BBY. "Brothers and Sisters" depicts H'Tar becoming a member of the Children of the Storm and is stated by the story to be its first member. Per the reasoning here, the events of The High Republic: Temptation of the Force, which take place at least one year and a few months after the destruction of Starlight Beacon, must take place in 228 BBY. As Temptation of the Force features Boolan as part of the Nihil and establishes that the Children of the Storm exist during its events, the flashback events of "Brothers and Sisters" featuring H'Tar must occur between those two years.
