The planetary ring around .

The planetary ring around D'Qar.

A planetary ring (or simply ring) was a circular band of small bodies orbiting around a planet in a flat disc-shaped region.[1]

Description

Planetary rings could be formed from the remnants of satellites, such as the silica ring of the planet Lah'mu, which were created after one of its moons was pulverized.[2] The rings revolving around Geonosis[3] and Bothawui were rocky in nature,[4] while the planet Minfar had a ring made of ice.[5] Planets could have multiple sets of rings, exemplified by a gas giant in the Unknown Regions.[6] It was also possible for moons themselves to possess rings; one of the moons of the planet Brendok had a ring system.[7]

Although ring systems could constitute navigational hazards,[8] some were mined for metal ore.[9] The rings of the gas giant Hudalla were some of the largest in the galaxy.[1] The ring of the planet Tiferep Major was disrupted when the wreckage-prison Accresker Jail fell through it.[10]

In a distant galaxy, the planetary ring in the orbit of the extragalactic planet Peridea was a graveyard made up of purrgil bones.[11]
