Phoebos was a daring[1] and rogue mechanic who,[2] around a century before the Galactic Civil War,[3] recreated the design of hand-drawn animal racing carts with modern technology for a whole new level of competition and risk.[1] The design of the superfast prototype podracer[2] replaced the cart[4] with a repulsorpod[1] and the animals[4] with flaming jet engines,[1] with a repulsorlift allowing the vehicle to hover.[4]
The prototype was entered virtually untested into an event on the planet Malastare by the racer Gustab Wenbus, for whom Phoebos had designed the vehicle.[2] The famous first experimental race ensured podracing's reputation as an incredibly dangerous and popular sport, with Wenbus going on to develop the practice and standardize[3] Phoebos's design[1] for podracers.[3]
Behind the scenes
In the current Star Wars canon, Phoebos was first mentioned in "Podracing on Tatooine," an article[5] written by Tim Veekhoven[6] in the "Guide to the Galaxy" department of the fifty-first issue of De Agostini's Star Wars: Build the Millennium Falcon magazine series,[5] which was published around December 23, 2015.[7] The Phoebos originated in the Star Wars Legends continuity, where the character was first mentioned in the 2000 reference book Inside the Worlds of Star Wars: Episode I, which was written by Kristin Lund.[8] The 2016 reference book Star Wars: Complete Locations misspells the character's name as Phoebus.[2]
