A doll was owned by the human female Nan during the High Republic Era when she was very young. The doll was made by the Zabrak man Hague—who was raising Nan after the deaths of her father and mother—during the early days of his wardship of the girl who was missing her parents. In 228 BBY, Nan mentioned the doll to Jedi Knight Reath Silas and became emotional when considering what it meant to her.

Description

The doll was owned by the human female Nan. According to Nan, the doll was made of rags knotted together, but had a head, arms, and legs.[1]

Nan (pictured) owned the doll when she was very young.

During the High Republic Era, the father and mother of Nan were killed when she was very young. After her parents' passings, Nan was taken in and raised by[1] their friend, the Zabrak[2] male Hague, who was also a member of the Nihil marauders. In the early days of his wardship of Nan, the girl was still missing her parents, so Hague made her a doll.[1] In 232 BBY,[3] Hague was killed while he was stranded on the Amaxine station with Nan. After Hague's death, Nan rose through the ranks of the Nihil as an intelligence operative.[1]

In 228 BBY,[4] Nan—who had recently taken on Hague's name as her surname—deserted the Nihil and sought revenge against the Nihil scientist Doctor Zadina Mkampa, whom she had learned was responsible for ensuring Nan and Hague had ended up on the Amaxine station, ultimately destroying Mkampa's laboratory. Afterward, she spoke with Jedi Knight Reath Silas about why she wanted revenge against the doctor, and the conversation turned to Hague. Nan explained that he had been the one person she believed in that had been good and true, and Silas asked if he really had raised her, which Nan confirmed. She then swallowed hard and told the Jedi about the doll Hague had made for her. As she was about to note what the doll had meant to her, her voice trembled and she could not to bear to talk anymore.[1]

Behind the scenes

Nan's doll was mentioned in the 2025 young-adult novel The High Republic: Into the Light, written by Claudia Gray as part of the Star Wars: The High Republic multimedia project's[1] Phase III.[5]

  3. Star Wars: The High Republic Character Encyclopedia dates the events of The High Republic: Into the Dark to 232 BBY.
  4. Star Wars: Timelines dates Starlight Beacon's destruction to 230 BBY. The implementation of the Guardian Protocols, which Star Wars: The High Republic Character Encyclopedia places in 229 BBY, took place one week after Starlight Beacon's fall according to The High Republic – Shadows of Starlight 1. As The High Republic Adventures (2023) 16, which features the Stormwall going down, takes place one year and a few months after the destruction of Starlight Beacon, it must be set in 228 BBY. The events of The High Republic: Tears of the Nameless also take place in 228 BBY per the reasoning here. As The High Republic: Into the Light states its events occur after the events of Tears of the Nameless and before the Stormwall goes down, they must also take place in that year.
