Mourushian Kelp was a type of sapient kelp[1] that originated from[2] the Mid Rim Mourushia system.[3] During the reign of the Galactic Republic, the Republic political figure Lady Hasquil acknowledged the sapient rights of the kelp, which resulted in Hasquil being cocooned for fifty years.[1]
In 19 BBY,[4] after the Republic was reorganized into the Galactic Empire, Senator Mon Mothma was detained and interrogated by Imperial security officers on the planet Coruscant. During her detainment, Mothma thought of the Mourushian Kelp while remembering several Republic political figures she considered to have been wrongly imprisoned, including Hasquil.[1]
Behind the scenes
Mourushian Kelp was mentioned in the 2025 novel Reign of the Empire: The Mask of Fear, written by Alexander Freed as the first installment of the Star Wars: Reign of the Empire trilogy.[1]

(backup link) (screenshot) Jason Fry, co-author of The Essential Atlas and a number of maps in the current Star Wars canon (see a list here), stated his intention to create homeworlds for numerous species based on context implied from their names. This article treats the Mourushia system as the location of one such homeworld with regard to the Mourushian Kelp species.

Star Wars: Edge of the Abyss on Penguin Books' official United Kingdom website (backup link) establishes the events of Reign of the Empire: The Mask of Fear take place thirteen years before the events of Reign of the Empire: Edge of the Abyss.
Rebecca Roanhorse (@rebeccaroanhorse) on Instagram (post): "Title and updated release date of my upcoming STAR WARS novel announced at SDCC. THE EDGE OF THE ABYSS takes place a year before Andor S1." (backup link) states that Edge of the Abyss takes place a year before the events of Andor Season 1, which are set in 5 BBY per the reasoning here. Therefore, the events of Edge of the Abyss must be set in 6 BBY, and the events of The Mask of Fear in 19 BBY.
