Merdeths were a type of huge insectoid that dominated the barren exterior[1] of their homeworld, the Outer Rim planet Geonosis. Omnivores, they would eat any organic matter they came across, using eight powerful tentacles to pull prey into their mouths. The enormous merdeths formed a symbiotic relationship with swarms of tiny, parasitic mips that fed on ichor found between the merdeth's carapace.[2]
In 22 BBY,[3] small hangars that dotted the perimeter of the Geonosian Stalgasin hive's droid loading fields were equipped with Geonosian fighters that were ready to make lightning strikes against the occasional marauding merdeth.[1] The merdeth's homeworld[2] was sterilized by the Galactic Empire around 9 BBY.[4]
Behind the scenes
In the current Star Wars canon, merdeths were first mentioned in the 2015 reference book Star Wars: Absolutely Everything You Need to Know.[5] The creatures originated in the Star Wars Legends continuity, where they were created for Geonosis and the Outer Rim Worlds, a 2004 supplement for the Star Wars Roleplaying Game produced by Wizards of the Coast.[6]
