- "Ah, Padawan. I heard your shuttle arriving. I'm Master Syo Bakarn, of the Jedi Council. Welcome to Tython. This is the ancestral home of our order, where the Jedi first came to be. And where our most promising Padawans complete their training."
- ―Syo Bakarn welcomes the future Barsen'thor to Tython at the Masters' Retreat
The Masters' Retreat was structure on the planet Tython used by the Jedi Order during the Cold War between the Galactic Republic and the reconstituted Sith Empire. Built on a rocky outcrop and surrounded by a lake, it consisted of a large cupola-topped disc with a pillared balcony beneath it and a pair of landing pads extending over the water.
Many Jedi visited the retreat for peace and tranquility and around 3643 BBY, two Jedi Padawans separately arrived at the retreat by shuttle to start their Jedi Trials. The new Padawan of Jedi Master Yuon Par was greeted by Jedi High Council member Syo Bakarn at the retreat but was soon dispatched to the Tythonian Gnarls region by Par to recover a set of teaching holograms being attacked by native Flesh Raiders.
The Padawan who would one day be known as the Hero of Tython was greeted by Derrin Weller, watchman of the training grounds in the Gnarls. After Weller received a distress call from the Bith Padawan Unaw Aharo about Flesh Raiders attacking, he dispatched the Padawan to go and help defeat the raiders.
Description
Lakeside retreat
Humanoid statues decorated the balcony of the Masters' Retreat.
The Masters' Retreat was a multi-story structure located on the Deep Core planet Tython, homeworld of the Jedi Order. Built on a rocky outcrop, it overhung above a walled-in lake and had its back against a stone rise. The top of the building was disc shaped with a shallow cupola roof and ring of windows circling it. Beneath the disc was a railed balcony overlooking the water, lit by a ring of lights on the disc's underside.[1]
The balcony included an alcove back toward the rock wall with various piping on its walls and a gold and silver statue of a robed humanoid standing at its rear. A matching statue stood out on the balcony facing the first, with a red and gray bench placed on either side of it.[1]
Jedi rooms
A smaller version of the statues stood against buttresses to each side of the alcove's entrance and faced one of the two central pillars holding up the disc, with four additional pillars at the structure's edge. On each side of the balcony there were doorways into small meeting rooms, one inside each buttress and one on each side with its back to the rock wall.[1]
A room at the Masters' Retreat
The circular rooms all contained a single table and chairs and various consoles. From in front of the doorways, a ramp curved down to a circular landing pad on each side of the Masters' Retreat. An antenna protruded below each landing pad toward the water below, with an additional antenna below the balcony's center and another at the apex of the roof. The white and blue flags of the Jedi Order hung across the balcony-level walls of the Masters' Retreat, which were primarily gray with red detailing.[1]
History
Away from conflict
- "There's a speeder here that'll take you to—hang on. Getting an emergency signal."
- ―Derrin Weller mentions the air taxis at the Masters' Retreat
Following the destruction of the Jedi Temple on the planet Coruscant and the relocation of the Jedi Order to Tython, members of the order made use of the Masters' Retreat during the Cold War against the reconstituted Sith Empire.[1] Many Jedi returned to the Masters' Retreat to seek peace and tranquility, away from the conflicts around Tython's Jedi Temple to the south.[4]
Air taxis used on of the landing pads at the Masters' Retreat during the Cold War.
In 3643 BBY,[5] one of retreat's two landing pads was used by air taxis, with a protocol droid overseeing them. A Galactic Republic medical droid was also stationed at the retreat, and various supply officers and Jedi, including initiates and guardians, spent time on the balcony. This included Jedi Master Benn and the Zabrak Jedi Matare, who discussed how dangerous the nearby Tythonian Gnarls area had become and whether it was a good idea to send Padawans there. Various crates and pallets were spread across the balcony and landing pads.[1]
A powerful new arrival
- "Yuon. I was beginning to worry."
"So you've arrived safely, my Padawan. I'm sorry I can't greet you properly, but we already have a crisis on our hands." - ―Syo Bakarn and Yuon Par
Yuon Par's new Padawan arrived at the Masters' Retreat in a shuttle.
That year,[5] a Jedi Padawan who was notably strong in the Force[2]—and would one day claim the title of Barsen'thor[6]—arrived at the Masters' Retreat to begin[2] his[7] Jedi Trials. Having traveled in a Rendaran-class assault shuttle from orbit, he disembarked on one of the landing pads and made his way up to the balcony, catching the attention of Benn briefly. The Padawan was then greeted by Jedi High Council member Syo Bakarn, who wished to see the Padawan who had caused such a stir with his abilities.[2]
Bakarn led the Padawan into one of the small meeting rooms, where the new arrival's master, Yuon Par, arrived late, wasting no time with introductions and explaining that there was a crisis at hand: members of the native Flesh Raider species were attacking holoprojectors in the Gnarls that displayed teaching holograms of the earliest Jedi. Par tasked her new Padawan with rescuing the recordings and so he left the retreat in a waiting air taxi, heading to the Gnarls.[2]
A hero's first steps
- "Welcome to Tython, Padawan. Everyone at the temple is looking forward to meeting you."
- ―Derrin Weller greets the future Hero of Tython at the Masters' Retreat
Derrin Weller greeted the future Hero of Tython at the Masters' Retreat and soon dispatched them to fight Flesh Raiders.
Around the same time as Par's Padawan, another Jedi Padawan with notable dueling skills[3] who would become known as the Hero of Tython[8] arrived at the Masters Retreat in a shuttle to begin their own Jedi Trials. As they disembarked on the landing pad, the Jedi Derrin Weller—watchman of the Jedi training grounds in the Gnarls and greeter of new arrivals—dismissed a trio of Jedi Initiates on the balcony and approached the new arrival to greet them. Leading the Padawan past Benn and Matare to one of the retreat's rooms, he explained that they would be assigned a new master for the Trials and that one of the air taxis would take them to their next destination.[3]
However, before he could finish, Weller was interrupted by an emergency signal from the Bith Jedi Unaw Aharo, who reported via hologram that Flesh Raiders were attacking the Padawan training grounds in the Gnarls with blasters. Weller dispatched the Padawan to help fend off the natives, getting to work at a console to send a warning to others about the attack including the Jedi Council. The Padawan took an air taxi to the Gnarls and Weller soon followed.[3]

STAR WARS: The Old Republic - Question ! :) - Page 3 on The Old Republic's official website (backup link) places Star Wars: The Old Republic about ten to twelve years after the signing of the Treaty of Coruscant, which is dated to 3653 BBY by Star Wars: The Old Republic Encyclopedia. The Old Republic — The Lost Suns 2 takes place ten years after the treaty, one week after the mission to Nar Shaddaa, and around the time of the SpecForce Incident. Since the mission and the incident are respectively part of Act I of the Jedi Knight and Republic Trooper's storylines, and the Trooper's Act I occurs concurrent to Act I of the Smuggler storyline, the general events of the Prologue and Act I for all classes can be assumed to occur in 3643 BBY.
