The master skeleton key[1] was a system-wide[2] skeleton key made by Warden Mattis Coto of the[1] underwater Devshi prison complex[2] to sell to criminal partners[1] by 42 BBY[3] After Jedi Master Mace Windu arrived to investigate Coto's criminal key making, the warden dispatched[1] a group of the prison's droids with overidden programming[2] to take the key to the surface and get it off of the planet Devshi.[1] The droids took a lift to the surface and then commandeered a skiff, but Windu pursued the group and disabled the droids before they could leave Devshi, recovering the key and placing it in a vault.[2]

Marvel's Mace Windu #1 Showcases the Prequel Hero in an Early Adventure – Exclusive Preview on StarWars.com (backup link) reveals Star Wars: Mace Windu, of which "Showdown at Ocean's Deep" is a part, takes place prior to Mace Windu's entry into the Jedi High Council, which is depicted in "Choices". As the episode occurs prior to Dooku's departure from the Jedi Order, which Star Wars: Timelines dates to 42 BBY, Star Wars: Mace Windu must occur as late as that year.
