Marrok's lightsaber was the red double-bladed spinning lightsaber owned by the Inquisitor Marrok, once known as the First Brother. Marrok continued to use the lightsaber after becoming a mercenary by 9 ABY. The saber was capable of switching between crescent mode, single-bladed, and disk mode double-bladed. While not in use, Marrok hooked the lightsaber on the upper back of his armor. Marrok used the lightsaber against Jedi Ahsoka Tano on the Core Worlds planet Corellia and for the final time on the planet Seatos, where the former Inquisitor fell to Tano in battle.

Marrok's lightsaber[3] was a double-bladed spinning lightsaber[1] capable of switching between single-bladed, otherwise known as crescent mode, and double-bladed, otherwise known as disk mode.[2] The saber possessed a cylindrical hilt[3] with an emitter ring[6] that had two barbs on either side.[3] Marrok's lightsaber housed two kyber crystals[4] that emitted red blades. He[5] carried the saber in crescent mode hooked across the upper back of his armor.[8]

Marrok and his lightsaber in Fortress Inquisitorius

In 19 BBY,[9] the First Brother,[10] a member of the Galactic Empire's Inquisitorius, carried the saber on his back, partially under his cloak, within Fortress Inquisitorius,[7] the headquarters of the Inquisitors.[11] Within the fortress, Marrok met[7] the Sith Lord[11] Darth Vader, master of the Inquisitorius.[5] Sometime around 9 ABY,[12] the First Brother, by then a mercenary known as Marrok and working for the[10] Nightsister[11] Morgan Elsbeth,[10] brought his saber with him as he accompanied fellow mercenaries Shin Hati and Baylan Skoll on[13] the planet[11] Arcana and searched the ruins of the Nightsisters' Temple.[13]

Later, Marrok confronted the former Jedi Ahsoka Tano at Facility 301G on Corellia,[5] a Core Worlds planet,[11] with his lightsaber ignited in crescent mode and accompanied by an HK-87 assassin droid. The pair engaged Tano in combat, with Marrok utilizing his lightsaber to attack and block. During the battle, Tano blocked Marrok's blade with her lightsabers before forcing the former Inquisitor away. Marrok and the droid eventually locked Tano's lightsabers with their weapons and leveraged the situation to push her toward the nearby trench. Still, Tano freed herself and incapacitated the assassin droid. The Jedi used the droid's body as a shield while attacking Marrok, who further dismantled the droid.[5]

The two momentarily separated before Marrok ignited his lightsaber's second blade and reengaged with Tano. The Jedi caught one of his blades between her two sabers again, and Force pushed the Inquisitor away. After Marrok received a signal through his gauntlet, he switched his saber to disk mode and threw the spinning saber at the Jedi while fleeing. Tano leaped over the lightsaber and gave chase. Marrok jumped aboard khis escape shuttle and recalled his saber. Tano angled out of the saber's path as it returned to Marrok's hand, who deactivated it.[5]

Marrok carried his lightsaber while flying in his Fiend fighter to defend the hyperspace transport ring, the Eye of Sion, stationed above the[14] planet[11] Seatos. After Tano's T-6 shuttle[14] T-6 1974[11] alluded his starfighter and escaped into a forest on the planet,[14] Marrok brought the lightsaber to a meeting with Elspeth, Hati, and Skoll at the planet's reflex point. Skoll then instructed Hati and Marrok to engage the shuttle's crew, Tano and[8] her former apprentice[5] Sabine Wren.[8]

After the two mercenaries impeded Tano and Wren's path, the four individuals split into groups, with Hati dueling Wren and Marrok facing Tano. Marrok squared off with Tano by igniting his blades and circling the Jedi. The former inquisitor engaged first,[8] twirling his saber and utilizing its double blades to attack Tano from multiple angles, though the Jedi deftly blocked each strike.[15] Eventually, Tano raised her saber above her head and waited for Marrok to attack. Marrok responded by holding out his hilt and rotating the twin blades around the emitter ring with increasing speed. As Marrok moved to strike at the Jedi, Tano dodged the attack and sliced his chest. The lightsaber's rotation slowed to a halt as the wounded Inquisitor fell to his knees. Soon afterward, the blades extinguished as Marrok died and dropped the lightsaber.[8]

Behind the scenes

Marrok's lightsaber first appeared in "Part One: Master and Apprentice," the first episode[13] of the first season of the television series Star Wars: Ahsoka, which aired on August 22, 2023, on Disney+.[16] The lightsaber was first previewed earlier in the year in Ahsoka's first trailer, which was first shown during Lucasfilm's Studio Showcase on April 7 during Celebration Europe in 2023. The trailer was then shown during the Celebration livestream[17] and posted to the Star Wars YouTube channel.[18] It was first identified as "Marrok's lightsaber" in a StarWars.com article detailing the Lucasfilm Pavilion—where the lightsaber was on display—at San Diego Comic-Con 2023, which was posted on July 21, 2023. The hilt was created by property master Josh Roth.[3]

Concept arts of Marrok wielding the lightsaber were drafted in 2021 by Brian Matyas,[19][20] a member of Ahsoka's concept team.[13] Marrok and his lightsaber were to be added to the video game Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes[21]—originally debuted November 24, 2015[22]—beginning October 3, 2024[21] but were delayed to October 8 due to an issue.[23] Marrok was designed for Galaxy of Heroes by CG_Guardian—who found the way he spun his lightsaber "cool and interesting." The spinning also inspired the Galaxy of Heroes team, so they included it in his abilities.[21]
