"Not fighting with knives, Marda Ro?"
―Vika Faer questions Marda Ro's weapons of choice during their spar[1]

A pair of staves wrapped in white mynock leather came into the possession of the Evereni pirate leader Marda Ro between 382 BBY and around 381 BBY. Around the latter year, she drew one of the staves to threaten the Twi'lek Fori Nagor in the street of a settlement on the planet Dantooine after Nagor had been following Ro. At some point no earlier than 379 BBY, Ro used the staves while sparring with the Evereni Vika Faer. She later mentioned the two encounters where she used her staves in a recording she made for her descendants, which her great-great-grandson Marchion Ro had listened to by 252 BBY.

Description

"I carry staves in my belt, wrapped with mynock leather just as white as my suit."
―Marda Ro, in her journal[1]

The staves were wrapped in white mynock leather.[1]

History

"I threw my weight down and managed to toss her over my shoulder. She landed with a huff, and I was on top of her, my stave in both hands, pressing her throat."
―Marda Ro, in her journal[1]

The melee weapons came into the possession of Marda Ro—the Evereni[1] founder of a group of pirates who would eventually become the Nihil[2]—between 382 BBY and around 381 BBY. Around the latter year,[3] Ro wore the staves on[1] her[4] belt during her visit to the oldest settlement on the planet Dantooine and drew one of them against the Twi'lek Fori Nagor after the Twi'lek had followed Ro from a public house in the settlement.[1]

By some point no earlier than 379 BBY,[5] Ro carried the staves in a harness on her back rather than a belt. At that time, she used the staves again while sparring against the Evereni Vika Faer. During the fight, Faer disarmed Ro of one stave, and later in the fight Ro used the other stave to press against Faer's neck when the Evereni was lying on the ground. Shortly after, the friendly fight was broken up by Faer's brother Velya Faer. Later, Ro mentioned the staves in a message she recorded for her descendants.[1] By 252 BBY,[6] during his youth, Ro's great-great-grandson Marchion Ro had listened to her chronicles, including the entries where the staves were mentioned.[4]

Behind the scenes

Marda Ro's staves appeared in flashbacks in the short story "A Closed Fist Has No Claws," written by Tessa Gratton and published in the 2023 young-adult anthology The High Republic: Tales of Light and Life as a part of the Star Wars: The High Republic multimedia project.[1]

  3. "A Closed Fist Has No Claws" establishes that Marda Ro visited Dantooine around a year after taking possession of the Gaze Electric, an event that Star Wars: The High Republic Character Encyclopedia dates to 382 BBY. Therefore, Ro's trip to Dantooine must have occurred around 381 BBY and she must have acquired the staves between these two dates.

  5. The segment of "A Closed Fist Has No Claws" depicting a Jedi's death onboard the Gaze Electric takes place around 379 BBY per reasoning here. Marda Ro met the Faers after the Jedi's death; therefore, she must have met them no earlier than 379 BBY.
  6. "The Lie" chapter in The High Republic: Eye of the Storm 1, which includes Shalla Ro's death, features Asgar Ro's ascension to Eye of the Nihil, an event dated to 252 BBY by Star Wars: The High Republic Character Encyclopedia. As The High Republic: Temptation of the Force establishes she introduced Marchion Ro to Marda Ro's journal, he must have listened to it by that year.
