The M-TD series, also known as the M-TD translator droid, was a model of translator droid manufactured by Cybot Galactica. The droid was based on M-TD, a miniature droid built by Chewbacca and C-3PO although they failed to trademark the design.

Description

The M-TD series was a micro repulsorlift-equipped translator droid that was capable of speaking its owner's language and a select few other languages specified by the owner. However, it lacked the full TranLang III communications module of the more-capable 3PO-series protocol droid. Like 3PO units, M-TD translator droids were equipped with a computer interface port and shutdown switch.[1]

History

The M-TD series was based on the droid M-TD, a miniaturiazed translator droid built by the Wookiee Chewbacca and the 3PO-series protocol droid C-3PO. The droid was a gift for Chewbacca's nephew Lowbacca, who was training to be a Jedi Knight at Luke Skywalker's Jedi Praxeum on Yavin 4.[2]

The success of the unit sparked interest from the droid industry, and rumors began circulating that Cybot Galactica planned to produce a similar design for sale.[2] Eventually, Cybot Galactica released the M-TD series to the consumer market since the design had not been trademarked by either of its creators. The droid was marketed to individuals who could not afford a full protocol droid, or for those who sought a more compact or mobile translator.[1]

Behind the scenes

The M-TD series was based on M-TD, the translator droid introduced in Young Jedi Knights: Heirs of the Force[3] which is set in 23 ABY[4] meaning that any appearance of the M-TD series should be from that date onwards. Despite this, Wizards of the Coast published several roleplaying adventures set during the era of the Prequel trilogy that included the M-TD series translator droid.
