"Lumrunners" is a short story co-written by John Beyer and Wayne Humfleet. It was published in Star Wars Adventure Journal 9 by West End Games in February 1996.

Plot summary

On Gallisport, Imperial customs officer Captain Alijah Orr receives a tip about the Corellian PB-950 Lumrunner allegedly attempting to smuggle weapons. Disliking the cockiness of the ship’s owner, Captain Shamus Falconi, Orr decides to personally oversee the inspection. While waiting for the ship to land, Captain of the Port Renea Luies identifies four individuals in the docking bay, including Dutan Lee and Chop Harlison, two locals with minimal or no criminal history.

Aboard the Lumrunner, Falconi and his first mate Grasheel, manage to scan the starport and quickly realize an inspection is imminent. They discreetly signal the landing party and instruct them to bluff their way through the check.

Claiming this inspection to be an Imperial matter, Orr dismisses Luies and begins inspecting the cargo. He firstly opens the crates waiting for pickup, finding only mining equipment, surprising even the owner Dutan Lee, who was supposed to be smuggling weapons offplanet. On the ship, Orr and his team start searching the rear of the cargo hold, confident the smugglers would hide any contraband at the back. However, only the expected lum and wine are found. In other crates, the stormtroopers discover industrial repulsor coils, but these are coated with Anti-Corr 113, a highly penetrating anti-corrosion gel, prompting a visual inspection only.

Having found no trace of contraband, the inspection team reseals the cargo with Imperial Customs Seals and leaves the ship. Falconi reveals his tricks: Harlison’s refined Tibanna gas was concealed in the crates at the entrance of the hold that the inspection team overlooked, while the military-grade repulsor coils were hidden in the larger industrial ones that the stormtroopers didn't dare to touch. To top it off, Luies was in on the plan, having swapped Dutan Lee’s weapons cargo before bringing it to the docking bay. Moreover, with the newly applied Imperial Seals, Falconi and his crew can now bypass all future inspections on these crates.
