The lava skimmer was a cauldron gripped by tongs at the end of a long metal pole and used by the Mustafarians of Mustafar to collect lava from the planet's natural lava streams. These devices served as both crucible tongs and pouring shanks.[1]

Lava skimmers consisted of a lava-resistant ceramic cauldron gripped by a ratchet clamp at the end of a lava-proof metal shank. To prevent the tongs from crushing the cauldron walls, they were equipped with pressure-stop locks.[1]
"Lava skimmer" was a title also used to describe those Mustafarians who employed these devices in their mining operations. Their pwoerful bodies enabled Southern Mustafarians to lift these heavy devices with relative ease.[1]
