Kohlen crystal shields were a highly-specialized type of personal energy shield designed by the Pijali monarchy.[1] By 40 BBY,[2] a secret division of Pijali royal guards were formed into the blackguards—a paramilitary organization operating out of a renovated Celestial Watchtower base by the Inner Rim planet's crown princess, Fanry. Worried that her lord regent, the Jedi Rael Averross, would attempt to impede her ascent to Pijal's throne as an absolute monarch, Fanry supervised the development of shields made using kohlen crystals from Pijal's moon, which were capable of deflecting Jedi lightsabers.[1]
