A Klivian was a liquor created by rebel pilot Derek "Hobbie" Klivian prior to his death in 3 ABY. Brewed in an old astromech droid, the Klivian was a tuber-based concoction that had a citrusy taste. Although most agreed that the Klivian was not enjoyable to actually consume, Hobbie's squadron-mates, namely the pilots Wedge Antilles and Wes Janson, continued to brew and serve the drink after Hobbie's passing in honor of their friend. A group of Alliance pilots, including Antilles and Janson, drank Klivians the night before the Battle of Endor in 4 ABY.

Derek "Hobbie" Klivian, the original creator of the drink
The Klivian was created by the Rebel Alliance pilot Derek "Hobbie" Klivian. Orange in color, it was a tuber-based liquor concocted in a hollowed-out R2 series astromech droid. It had a strong smell of citrus as well as engine fuel, and the pilot Norra Wexley felt the taste was similar to carbon scoring.[1]
The drink was served in glasses, mugs, or dented tin jugs. It was potable by humans, Sullustans, and Kel Dor. Although not many truly enjoyed the taste of a Klivian, it could be used as a palate cleanser and also served as a way to honor the fallen pilot.[1]

Hobbie's friend Wedge Antilles continued to brew the drink after the pilot's passing.
After[1] Klivian's death at the Battle of Hoth in 3 ABY, his[2] squadron-mates Wedge Antilles and Wes Janson continued to brew the drink and named it after their deceased friend. The night before the Alliance attack on the Galactic Empire's second Death Star[1] battle station in 4 ABY,[2] a group of pilots, including Antilles, Janson, Norra Wexley, Nien Nunb, a Kel Dor, and Alliance general Lando Calrissian, discussed the drink while aboard the[1] cruiser[2] Home One. Although Antilles, Janson, and Wexley had consumed the drink before, several others had not. When Wexley commented that she thought a droid had brewed it given how awful she felt it tasted, Antilles told her that the squadron had been continuing the process since Klivian had passed on.[1]
Janson then proposed that Antilles get a round of Klivians for everyone, and despite protests, Antilles obliged. Calrissian was appalled by the drink, while Nunb quickly spit it out upon tasting it. Meanwhile, the Kel Dor was unfazed by the drink and even found it pleasant, which greatly impressed Wexley.[1] Later, Calrissian jokingly offered to get Antilles another round of Klivians as they walked toward a water dispenser.[3]
Behind the scenes
The Klivian first appeared in the short story "The Buy-In," written by Suzanne Walker and published in the 2023 anthology From a Certain Point of View: Return of the Jedi.[1]
