- "This is it! Or was, an age ago. Don't you see, Slick? Kiirium is artificial shielding material, not very good by modern standards but a major breakthrough in its time, and tough to produce to boot."
- ―Badure
Kiirium was an artificial shielding material whose creation was a major breakthrough around the time of the Xim Wars.[1] One of the materials base components was a mineral called kiiral.[2] Difficult to manufacture, the material could be used to shield heavy guns and engines, allowing Xim the Despot to field warships that were better armed and faster than almost anything else that his opponents could field.[1] Xim covered his war-robots with a laser-reflective kiirium sheen, which gave the droid the ability to deflect laser blasts.[3]
Xim obtained vast quantities of the metal for his growing war machine, and loaded the treasure ship Queen of Ranroon with kiirium, mytag crystals, and Bordhell-type fuel slugs to hoard in his vaults on Dellalt. At that time, these materials represented the pinnacle of military technology and were extremely valuable. Although the ship successfully delivered its load, legends arose that it vanished with the treasure aboard, inspiring generations of treasure hunters to search for the lost ship and its reputed wealth.[1]
By the time of the Galactic Civil War, kiirium's had been greatly devalued and it was ubiquitous through the galaxy. In 1BBY, Han Solo was among an expedition that discovered the fabled treasure of Xim consisted of a stockpile of outdated war supplies, now worthless due to advances in technology.[1]
