Kar Ranth was a Gotal smuggler who worked as a representative for Jabba the Hutt. He used to be a spice user, but chose to stop using it and remained sober ever since. During the Galactic Civil War,[3] at some point before 0 BBY,[2] Kar Ranth was assigned to conduct business with the Black Sun syndicate on the planet Ylesia.
A squad of rebels who were forced to do Jabba's bidding met up with Ranth at the Mos Eisley spaceport. Ranth briefed the group on the nature of the spice before heading off to Ylesia. The group arrived at the ruins of an ancient structure where the meeting was held. The representative of the Black Sun was Galek, a man who Ranth had injured in the past, and now bore a nasty scar across his left eye. Kar Ranth checked the product and confirmed that everything was accounted for. Before the deal was sealed, the Black Sun's lookout reported TIE fighters inbound. Galek then accused Kar Ranth of drawing the Empire's attention and fatally shot him.[3]
Behind the scenes
Kar Ranth was created for the Jabba's Realm expansion set,[4] supplementary material for the Star Wars Legends strategy board game Star Wars: Imperial Assault, which was released in 2016.[5] Kar Ranth was introduced into canon via the "Jabba's Realm" campaign added to Legends of the Alliance, a companion app for Star Wars: Imperial Assault, in 2019. Kar Ranth only appears during the campaign if the players choose to do the mission "Hostile Negotiations" where they attend the spice deal, as opposed to choosing the mission "Trophy Hunting" where they hunt down Imperial officer Kallenn. This article assumes the players chose to do the "Hostile Negotiations" mission. If the players don't choose to do the mission, then Kar Ranth is not accompanied by the rebel group, and the events and outcome of the spice deal are unknown.[3]

"A Certain Point of View" — Star Wars Insider 203 states that the Galactic Civil War officially began at the Declaration of the Rebel Alliance. Since the Declaration is dated to two years before the Battle of Yavin by Star Wars: On the Front Lines, and the battle occurred in 0 BBY according to Star Wars: Galactic Atlas, the official beginning of the war was in 2 BBY. Since Legends of the Alliance takes place during the Galactic Civil War, it must take place after the war began.
