"What about your droid?"
"Well it's not my droid, as such. It's my family's droid. Dee-Twelve. He helps out on the farm. I'm not sure what we'll do without him, to be honest."
―Rooper Nitani and Jerlyn[1]

Jerlyn, a resident of Peka village on the world Batuu, was a member of a family. The family owned a farm and a droid, Dee-Twelve, that worked on the farm.[1] Around 379 BBY,[2] after Jerlyn forgot to lock up his family's farm at night, Dee-Twelve was taken by a salmaca creature that had been raiding Peka for valuables to line its nest. The next day, when Jedi Padawan Rooper Nitani arrived in Peka during her Jedi Trials, she met Jerlyn, who told her about his family's farm and droid while explaining the village's problem with the salmaca. Jerlyn was upset both because his family could not afford a replacement droid to perform the important work Dee-Twelve did on the farm and because he considered Dee-Twelve to be part of his family. After hearing this, Nitani agreed to recover Dee-Twelve and did so successfully after traveling to the salmaca's cave.[1]

Behind the scenes

Jerlyn's family appeared in the short story "Shield of the Jedi," written by George Mann and published in the 2023 young-adult anthology The High Republic: Tales of Light and Life as a part of the Star Wars: The High Republic multimedia project.[1]

  2. "Shield of the Jedi" establishes that Rooper Nitani is around eighteen years old during its events. During the events of The High Republic: Quest for Planet X, which Star Wars: The High Republic Character Encyclopedia dates to 382 BBY, Nitani is fifteen years old. Therefore, "Shield of the Jedi" must take place around 379 BBY.
