"No one hurts you like family."
―Jaylen Vrax, to Kay Vess[1]

Jaylen Vrax, born Jaylen Barsha, was a human male crime lord, and heir to the fortunes of his wealthy Corellian business family, the Barshas. He was an associate of Kay Vess during the Imperial Era. They, along with ND-5 were waiting on the ship when Jaylen Vrax offered her a job.[1]

Biography

Early Life

Jaylen Vrax was born Jaylen Barsha on Corellia shortly before the start of the Clone Wars. Jaylen's father was a wealthy shipping magnate, and Jaylen was the favorite son - set to inherit the family business after he came of age and completed his education.[1]

Sibling Rivalry

Having survived ND-5's attack, Jaylen placed a restraining bolt on the droid his brother sent to kill the family, thus gaining his loyalty.

Jaylen's father had another, illegitimate son named Sliro. Though Jaylen accepted Sliro as a brother, he was not kind to him and constantly reminded him of his "bastard" status, even if the family made sure he "had a place at the table". From Sliro's perspective, this amounted to table scraps, but the Barsha family considered this better than starvation and destitution. Sliro, however, never got over it. He would join the Galactic Empire as a member of the ISB, and the Barsha Family had controversial political sympathies during the Clone Wars. Sliro reported this to his superiors, and the Empire proceeded to seize the Barsha family's assets, making Jaylen heir apparent to nothing.[1]

While most of the battle droids that fought for the Confederacy of Independent Systems during the Clone Wars were dismantled and melted down for scrap, Sliro had managed to get his hands on a fully functional BX-series droid commando, JX394ND-5777, and dispatched him to serve as an assassin droid. Sliro sent this droid to kill every last member of the Barsha family. The droid killed Jaylen's parents and siblings, but Jaylen was able to subdue him. Rechristening him ND-5, Jaylen fitted the droid with a Restraining bolt to ensure that the droid would follow Jaylen's commands, not Sliro's. Blaming Sliro for the loss of his birthright, Jaylen vowed revenge on his brother.[1]

Tipping the Scales

With a reprogrammed assassin droid as his personal enforcer and nothing much left to lose, Jaylen reinvented himself as the Scoundrel Jaylen Vrax. Entering an underworld where the Black Sun, Hutt Clan, Pyke Syndicate, Crimson Dawn, and the Crymorah Syndicate were competing for dominance, Jaylen decided to remain a freelancer rather than formally join any of the gangs. He would plan heists and set up smuggling rings for any crime boss who paid him enough credits. He eventually gained respect in the Underworld. After Qi'ra stole the carbonite-frozen Han Solo from Boba Fett and held an auction to sell him to the highest bidder, Jaylen was able to attend the auction as a special guest with ND-5.[1]

Not long after the auction, a new crime syndicate known as the Zerek Besh quickly rose up through the ranks of the Underworld. Jaylen recognized its leader as his hated brother Sliro. Jaylen decided that the best form of revenge against Sliro would be to steal this new criminal empire out from under him.[1]

Recruiting Kay Vess

"There's a reason why people like me don't push back on people like Sliro: Survival."
"Exactly. And I for one am tired of fighting for the scraps left by rich, overdressed tyrants like Sliro. This is our chance. You and I can break him, together."
"You really don't like this guy."
"I'm just trying to tip the scales for people like us, Kay.
"
―Kay and Jaylen[1]

With his plan of revenge in place, Jaylen set about finding the manpower to put his plan into action. He hired master Slicer Riko Vess for her codebreaking skills. He then learned that Riko's daughter, Kay, had survived an unsuccessful attempt to rob Sliro's vault in Westhill Palace. Though she had failed, she had escaped alive, and managed to get pretty far without any schematics of the Palace's security systems. After saving Kay from a bounty hunter hired by Sliro, Jaylen proposes that Kay work with him in a second attempt at robbing the vault. Jaylen tells her that the vault contains 157 million credits worth of unmarked Beskar ingots. While Kay has a price on her head, her share of the loot would be enough to buy her freedom.[1]

Equipment

Jaylen had a Relby K-25 blaster pistol in a holster.[1]
