Ithorian herd ships were a class of massive city-ship used by the Ithorians as a home away from home. They were based on the repulsorlift herd-cities of their planet, but were enclosed for space travel. The ships travel the galaxy on a predetermined course set by the herd, but return to Ithor once every three years in an event known as the Herd Meet.[1]

The Ithorians referred to the starships that docked aboard and remained with the herd ship for a time as Ph'thwyll, a type of fungus that attached itself to the seedpods of the Johinuu tree. This name was only used privately among fellow Ithorians.[1]

An Ithorian city of Dewbright on the planet Auratera was located above the surface of the world on elevated platforms similar to the tradition of Ithorian herd ships.[2]
