An irisophant was a creature with bones strong enough to withstand the claws of the Evereni species.[1] Around 381 BBY,[2] the Evereni pirate gang leader Marda Ro bought a nail file made from the bone of an irisophant from a child operating out of a stand on the side of a road in a settlement on the planet Dantooine. The file was strong enough for[1] her[3] to use it for her nails. Ro later documented buying the file, including a mention of an irisophant, in a[1] journal[3] recorded for posterity[1] that was passed down to her descendants Shalla Ro and Marchion Ro and listened to by them[3] by 252 BBY.[4]

Behind the scenes

An irisophant was mentioned in the short story "A Closed Fist Has No Claws," written by Tessa Gratton and published in the 2023 young-adult anthology The High Republic: Tales of Light and Life as a part of the Star Wars: The High Republic multimedia project.[1]

  2. "A Closed Fist Has No Claws" establishes that Marda Ro visited Dantooine around a year after taking possession of the Gaze Electric, an event that Star Wars: The High Republic Character Encyclopedia dates to 382 BBY. Therefore, Ro's trip to Dantooine must have occurred around 381 BBY.

  4. "The Lie" chapter in The High Republic: Eye of the Storm 1, which includes Shalla Ro's death, features Asgar Ro's ascension to Eye of the Nihil, an event dated to 252 BBY by Star Wars: The High Republic Character Encyclopedia. As The High Republic: Temptation of the Force establishes she introduced Marchion Ro to Marda Ro's journal, they must have listened to it by that year.
