An ion missile was a type of missile that could be launched from on a starfighter.[1] The Rokana Raiders developed a technology that supercharged the ions used in ion weaponry. This was done by channeling ambient ionic energy into a ship's mounted ion turrets and ion missiles thus greatly increased the effectiveness of the weapons.[2] By 3 ABY,[3] this technology had been outlaws by the Galactic Empire.[2]
In 3 ABY,[3] the thief Kay Vess paid a starship mechanic and supplied them with the materials required to equip the Trailblazer, her EML-850 light freighter, with M-IO4 ion missiles and later M-IO8 ion missiles. Later that same year, Vess recovered Rokana Raiders' supercharged ion technology from an encryption sealed container in the Khepi system.[2]
Behind the scenes
Ion missiles were first depicted in the canon continuity in the Rebel Alliance Conversion Kit for the table top miniatures game Star Wars: X-Wing Second Edition published by Fantasy Flight Games in 2018.[4] Ion missiles were originally introduced in the Star Wars Legends continuity in the 1999 video game, Star Wars: X-Wing Alliance developed by Totally Games published by LucasArts.[5]
