- "The Empire's engineering branch is tasked with constructing garrisons and other structure of strategic value, including ore mines, power generators, and space stations."
- ―Admiral Wullf Yularen, Imperial Handbook: A Commander's Guide
The Imperial Engineering Corps, also called Imperial Engineering or Imperial Corps of Engineers, were a corps of engineers in the Galactic Empire's Military. They were responsible for building operation for the military, such as constructing bases.
Description
The Imperial Engineering Corps was a branch of the Imperial Military in charge of the construction of various military facilities, such as garrisons, and strategic structures, such as space stations, power generators and mining facilities.[1] The Engineering Corps therefore worked closely with the Imperial Army and the Imperial Navy,[3] though the Navy had its own Engineering Division. The Engineering Corps was also tasked with searching out for obedient alien populations to act as laborers.[1]
Members of the Engineering Corps were trained at the Imperial Engineers Academy on Carida[4] and had to receive biannual certification from the prestigious Institute of Starship Engineers.[5] Officers of the Engineering Corps used a specific military rank system. It was made of "specialist" ranks similar to the ranks of the Imperial Army, namely general, colonel, major, commander, captain, lieutenant and officer. Among those, junior ranks were prefixed by "engineering": engineering captain, engineering lieutenant and engineering officer. High-ranking Engineering officers that raised above the rank of general are promoted at the rank of vice admiral with the honorific title of master engineer.[4]
Some Imperial engineers would be deployed in ground operations as battlefield engineers, operating on damaged vehicles and laying down defenses. They wore helmets similar to those of Imperial gunners and were equipped with blast cannons, F-187 fusioncutter and detonation packs.[6] Otherwise, Imperial engineers were simply armed with light blaster pistols.[3]
History
- "It was Imperial Transport who brought you there, Imperial Supply who arranged and provisioned that house for you, and Imperial Engineering who built the camouflaged island landing site for your use."
- ―Grand Admiral Thrawn
Engineering's constructions included the Imperial Ore Facility on Raxus Prime and the Raxus Prime Imperial Shipyard in orbit of Raxus. The latter used metal collected from the surface to build Star Destroyers and was mentioned to be the most important construction project undertaken by the Corps at the time, around 2 BBY.[8]
Following the Battle of Yavin, the Imperial Engineering Corps was tasked to carry out a recovery operation in the Yavin system to salvage scrap of the Death Star.[9]
In 9 ABY, Grand Admiral Thrawn mentioned to Joruus C'baoth, the mad clone of Jedi Master Jorus C'baoth, that the Corps was responsible for building him an island on the planet of Jomark.[7]
In the journal of a New Republic historian Voren Na'al, Mount Tantiss on Wayland was assumed by the New Republic Xenoarchaeology Division search teams to have been honeycombed by the Imperial Engineering Corps.[2]
