Ilsan Kowal was a Jedi Knight of the Jedi Order during the High Republic Era.[2] In 228 BBY,[1] he took part in a series of missions carried out by the Jedi and Republic Defense Coalition to cross the Nihil pirates' Stormwall hyperspace barrier using the Sunvale device to rescue refugees from the Nihil's Occlusion Zone region of space and bring them to Republic space. During Kowal's mission, he and the Republic Defense Coalition pilot he was teamed up with both died. Before she undertook one such mission of her own[2] later the same year,[1] Jedi Master Avar Kriss mentally recalled Kowal's death and noted his mission had been the first to fail.[2]

Ilsan Kowal was mentioned in the 2024 novel The High Republic: Temptation of the Force, written by Tessa Gratton and published as part of the Star Wars: The High Republic multimedia project's[2] Phase III.[3]
