The Galactic Barrier was a web of hyperspace anomalies.
Hyperspace anomalies were phenomena that connected realspace with hyperspace. After the Rebel Alliance destroyed the Second Death Star in 4 ABY, the large number of hyperspace anomalies located in the Moddell sector caused most of the resulting explosion energies to be diverted into hyperspace. This prevented a large-scale devastation of the surrounding moons.[1]
