"Naboo's broad-backed herbivores stand about three to four meters at their shoulders and can weigh more than thirty kilograms."
―From the journal of Ardis San Tekka[1]

Hrumphs were a type of non-sentient quadrupedal herbivore found in the swamps of the planet Naboo. The had purple spots smattered across their lightly tanned body and four long horns that they used together with their highly sensitive ears to avoid predators. At some point after the Battle of Exegol in 35 ABY, Galactic Society of Creature Enthusiasts Director of Creature Cartography Ardis San Tekka wrote about hrumphs in her journal.

Biology and appearance

"Their lightly tanned skin is interrupted by a smattering of purple dots across their stomach, increasing in concentration as they make their way toward the spine. There, these dots morph into a series of cartilaginous indigo spikes."

Hrumphs had four long horns.

Hrumphs were a type of broad-backed non-sentient herbivore found in the swamps of the[1] Mid Rim[2] planet Naboo. They had four legs ending in white furred black feet and stood between three and four meters tall at the shoulder, weighing over thirty kilograms. The creature's skin was lightly tanned but was interrupted by a smattering of purple dots that began at the hrumph's stomach and then increased in concentration moving toward the herbivore's spine, where they morphed into a series of cartilaginous indigo spikes.[1]

The spots also continued into a streak of purple in the hrumph's otherwise white fur tail. A hrumph's head consisted of a black beak beneath a purple crest with two small blue eyes atop it. Above these, the creature's four long horns protruded upwards, primarily white in color but with blue patterning and black tips. The herbivores used these horns together with their highly sensitive ears to scout for predators and avoid them.[1]

History

Galactic Society of Creature Enthusiasts Director of Creature Cartography Ardis San Tekka included an illustrated entry on hrumphs in her journal[1] at some point after the Battle of Exegol in 35 ABY.[3]

Behind the scenes

In the current Star Wars canon, hrumphs were mentioned in the 2024 reference book Star Wars Bestiary, Vol. 1: Creatures of the Galaxy, which was written by S.T. Bende and illustrated by Iris Compiet.[1] Bende and the book's editor, Sammy Holland, compiled a spreadsheet of around four hundred potential creatures to include in the Beastiary when they started work on it in 2022, with hrumphs making it into the first draft and surviving further cuts after that to be included in the final one hundred and thirty.[4]

A group of eight hrumphs form an outward facing circle around three young hrumphs to protect them from an attacking veermok.

Hrumphs originated in the Star Wars Legends continuity.

The book started production in 2023, with Compiet using acrylic, gouache, and watercolor paints for the illustrations of the hrumphs and other creatures. Preferring to reflect the way that San Tekka would have drawn in-universe, the artist used traditional techniques when creating the artwork and produced several sketches for each entry. The final selection of images used in the book was then made by the Lucasfilm Story Group.[4] The species originated in the Star Wars Legends continuity, where they first appeared in the 1999 Lucas Learning video game Star Wars Episode I: The Gungan Frontier.[5]
