- "The Galactic Republic had, at various times in its history, incentivized civilians to move from the Core Worlds to the galactic frontier and Outer Rim, where they were often equipped with ongoing supplies and assistance."
- ―Beaumont Kin, The Rise and Fall of the Galactic Empire
The Homestead Act was a decree issued by the Republic Ministry of Economic Development that incentivized travel to the Outer Rim Territories, where the Galactic Republic would supply the settlers with supplies, in the hopes that these new worlds would join the Republic. The settlers would also give the Republic a percentage of resources collected from these planets.[2]
Behind the scenes
In the real world, the Homestead Acts were a series of laws issued by the United States government allowing citizens to acquire public land by residing on it.[3] Lucasfilm Story Group member Pablo Hidalgo pointed out that the Erso homestead and Lars homestead had similar kitchen layouts, suggesting that a galactic homestead act was responsible for the standardized supplies.[4]
