"Dumb Arconan bet me five big ones that the tinhead is gonna come up roses. Against a Holwuff! Like anyone can win against one of those."
―A bar patron on Nurosenti[2]

The Holwuff[2] were a sentient species in the galaxy.[1] One, Rogwa Wodrata was a senator.

History

Holwuffs were present within the wider galaxy by 252 BBY[3] Holwuffs had a strong reputation as formidable fighters. Some were even designated "Holwuff berserkers"[2] At least one Holwuff was elected senator.[4]

Biology and appearance

Holwuff had a large, broad head. Their skin was gray-brown and deep folds and wrinkles covered the face, especially around their short, wide snouts. Two large nostrils sat at the front of their snouts. The eyes were small, dark, and set deep under a thick brow ridge. The mouth was a wide horizontal slit. Two short, yellowed tusks curved upward from the lower jaw. Short gray hairs grew along the top ridge and lower face.[1]

The being had large, broad hands with four fingers, including what an opposable thumb positioned lower on the hand tapered to blunt tips with pale, flat nails.[1]

By 252 BBY[3]in a bar owned by Karter near a Nurasenti spaceport, a Holwuff described as a “Holwuff berserker” engaged in a violent brawl with Lourna Dee, an armored Twi'lek female wearing battered Mandalorian-style armor. Patrons placed bets on the fight, with one customer on a comlink to Korval asserting that no one could defeat a Holwuff and wagering five ingots on it, while an Arcona patron named Sneef wagered five ingots on the armored fighter. After the Holwuff was killed by four point-blank blaster shots, Sneef won the bet and suggested settling it with a bottle of Mind Eraser bought by the losing customer, only for the victorious armored Lourna Dee to approach Sneef, confirm his winnings, and take the bottle after a mild protest from him, which he withdrew when challenged.[2]

One Holwuff, Senator Rogwa Wodrata, supported the Confederacy of Independent Systems during the Separatist Crisis,[4] attending a summit on Geonosis where the Executive Separatist Council pledged loyalty to Count Dooku just before the beginning of the Clone Wars.[1]

Behind the scenes

The Holwuff were first developed as the species for the character of Rogwa Wodrata in 2002 film Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones, directed by George Lucas. Rogwa Wodrata was created to replace the character Toonbuck Toora in the 2002 film, Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones.[5][6] Toora was originally present during filming of the Separatist council scene,[6][5] She was practical alien originally built for the Senate scenes in Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace, was present during filming of Attack of the Clones[6] but during post-production, director George Lucas was unsatisfied with the lack of expression or menace in her mask and decided to replace her with Wodrata.[7][5][6][8] According to the website Avleyman the character was played by Hilton Howson.[9] Rogwa's head, nicknamed 'Gatorhead' by Industrial Light & Magic was a retooled alien Jedi design that was composited over Toonbuck Toora.[6][5]

The Holwuff species made another canonical appearance in the form of Senator Rogwa Wodrata, who was visible during a retelling of the events depicted in Attack of the Clones within the story This is Obi-Wan.[10]

  3. 3.0 3.1 Star Wars: Timelines dates the events of The High Republic: Tempest Runner to 231 BBY and also establishes that Asgar Ro became Eye of the Nihil in 252 BBY. The High Republic: Eye of the Storm 1 depicts Lourna Dee as a member of the Nihil at this point. As Tempest Runner establishes that Dee joined the Nihil after the raid in the Abrion sector, the raid must have taken place by 252 BBY. The audio drama further states that the Holwuff was killed on Nurasenti before the Abrion sector raid, therefore meaning he must passed away by that year.
