- "Go to the cantina and speak with Herman Pate. He has my ring. He's not a bad guy, but for some reason he hasn't ever returned my ring and seems to always avoid the subject. Herman is usually at the cantina."
- ―Vance Groten, to a spacer
Herman Pate was a Human male who lived during the Galactic Civil War. He lived at Dee'ja Peak on Naboo.[1] In 1 ABY,[2] he won a ring from Vance Groten during a Sabacc game. Pate later gave the ring to Janelle, a smuggler leader, to pay a debt. As the ring was a family heirloom, Groten later tried to pay Pate to recover the ring but it was not in his own anymore. Vance Groten finally dispatched a spacer to find the smuggler leader Janelle and get the ring back.[1]
Behind the scenes
Herman Pate appeared as a non-player character in the 2003 video game Star Wars Galaxies, a massively multiplayer online roleplaying game developed by Sony Online Entertainment and published by LucasArts,[1] prior to its closure on December 15, 2011.[3] Herman Pate was added to the game as part of the "Legacy Quest" with the release of the "Publish 25," a.k.a. the "New Game Enhancements," on November 15, 2005.[4]

Star Wars Galaxies (post-NGE) — Legacy Quest: "Do Vance Groten a Favor" on Naboo
- ↑ The opening crawl of Star Wars Galaxies: An Empire Divided dates the game to after the events of Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, and additionally, Serji-X Arrogantus, who died in Star Wars (1977) 10—the events of which The New Essential Chronology dates to 0 ABY—appears in the game. Therefore, at least a portion of Star Wars Galaxies must be set in that year. Furthermore, in the game Ruwan Tokai references the destruction of the Death Star as having occurred one year earlier, and Strongholds of Resistance also places the events of Galaxies' Chapter 9: "The Fury of Exar Kun" in 1 ABY. Lastly, while Chapter 11: "The Battle of Echo Base" features the Battle of Hoth—dated to 3 ABY by The New Essential Chronology—the developers have stated that the portrayal of that battle in the game is intentionally anachronistic. Therefore, the events of Star Wars Galaxies must span from 0 ABY to around 1 ABY.
