The great cull was a massacre perpetrated by the ancient Sith upon the Talortai species over four thousand seasons[3] before 231 BBY.[4] The Talortai became an endangered species as a result, when their numbers had once been legion. Remembered in Talortai legend, the cull was said to have been perpetrated by an army riding on the backs of dragons as they cut down the population with blazing crimson blades. The cull had a profound effect on Talortai culture, leading the species' elders to institute strict rules against the use of their natural Force powers out of fear, as well as limiting their numbers and instituting severe punishment on nonconformity. The rules were still in place by the High Republic Era, and the Talortai Udi Dis, who had been cast out and joined the Nihil pirates, thought about the legends of the cull when he visited Rystan.[3]

Behind the scenes

The great cull was mentioned in the 2021 novel The High Republic: The Rising Storm, written by Cavan Scott.[3]

Notes and references

  1. The High Republic: The Rising Storm describes the great cull as having been perpetrated by the Sith. As Star Wars (2015) 9 describes the Sith as having been born from the Hundred-Year Darkness, it must have occurred before the great cull.
  2. Ultimate Star Wars states that the Sith were nearly annihilated in the Jedi-Sith War, which drove Darth Bane, the final survivor, to create the Rule of Two, as stated in "Sacrifice." As many Sith are said to have been involved in the great cull, it must have occurred before that war.
