A grease gun was a type of maintenance tool. One model had a nozzle to dispense lubricant after being warmed in a heating element attached to the side of the tool and was used to oil the joints of droids.[1] A smaller model of grease gun with a barrel could be used to repair hyperdrives.[3] Another model with a longer body and barrel was used on podracers.[4]

By 32 BBY,[5] the Human Anakin Skywalker used the grease gun made for oiling droid joints when he built his protocol droid C-3PO while living on the desert planet Tatooine.[1]

Behind the scenes

The grease gun was introduced as an accessory with the Anakin Skywalker (Tatooine) figure in Hasbro's Star Wars: Episode I toyline,[2] released on May 3, 1999.[6] Although the grease gun does not appear in the prequel trilogy film Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace,[7] which premiered on May 19, 1999,[6] the 2012 reference book Star Wars: The Phantom Menace: The Expanded Visual Dictionary, by Jason Fry and David West Reynolds, identifies a prop as the grease gun—indicating it was not created solely for the toy line.[1]
